This is now my 3rd Flip camera (they are all still in operation, I just can’t help upgrading when a higher quality product hits the market). I always fall in love with my new Flip video camera and this one is no exception – I prefer the design of the Ultra HD over the Mino because of the larger screen, and the new 3rd generation is noticeably thinner than last year’s model which makes it lighter and easier to hold. HUGE HUGE HUGE improvement in video quality on the 3rd generation model – image stabilization and now 60 frames per seconds (FPS) compared to 30 FPS in the previous HD model. This 60 FPS results in noticeably higher quality video and the ability to zoom more effectively. This model comes with a rechargeable battery pack so you can charge via your usb port on your computer, or if you are traveling and don’t have access to USB the Flip Ultra also allows you to put 3 AA batteries for videographers who are “on the go.”

This is my first FLIP video camera and even though I can’t compare it to previous models, I’d have to give this high ratings for quality of video files and ease of use. I’ve used my Canon digital camera for video files in the past.

Let’s start with basics. The camera is slim in size, small enough to fit easily in a pocket or purse. It is USB rechargeable (hook it up to your computer) but can be backed up in a pinch by using 3 AAA batteries if you find yourself getting low on charge at an inopportune time (but don’t count on using AAA batteries all the time because they won’t last very long – it’s just a quick fix if you need an emergency charge for a little while).

You can shoot up to 2 hours of high definition video (which I found to be almost too HD when filming people – you can really see every pore or flaw in the skin, it’s that good!). Very clear, crisp video and simple to use. 2 hours of video equals abut 8 GB of video. This is not like a digital camera where you can go out and buy a card to add more GB capacity but I don’t think you would even need that. 8 GB is quite a lot and enough.

There’s something called image stabilization which I tested by taping the camera to my front window dashboard of the car and then driving a few miles to see how the video looked. It looked surprisingly clean and stable. Seriously.

In the final analysis, while we have a few nitpicks for the Zi8, we have to say it’s the best pocket camcorder we’ve reviewed to date, with superior image quality and the best features. Today, we’d have to recommend it over the Flip Video models, though we can’t say what the future holds–for instance, we’ve yet to see Samsung’s contender–as Flip and other manufacturers will undoubtedly offer their own new pocket camcorders with these types of appealing new features and 1080p video capture.

The Kodak Zi8 has been a game changer for me personally.
When I purchased mine nearly a year ago, it was the perfect low cost HD video solution and still is. The Zi8 records HD Video 720p and 1080, although to be honest it’s 1080p isn’t great but the 720p is awesome. The built in mic works pretty well but the Zi8`s strong suit is it has an audio-in jack for connecting external microphones, brilliant! The Zi8 takes still photos at 5MP and if its a bright sunny day the photos will be full of rich color and great clarity. However, if you’re shooting indoors stills or video, bring a light because low light is definitely the Zi8′s greatest weakness. If this pocket cam came with a built-in flash it would be the ultimate pocket cam. The other great feature this camera brings to the table is the use of SD memory cards instead of internal flash memory found on the Flip cams. HD video devours memory so having the ability to drop in a 16GB or 32GB SD card is awesome. Another cool feature the Kodak Zi8 has is it can zoom while shooting video which is a feature a lot of low cost cameras lack.

I rarely will type/review products but I’ve been a little frustrated reading the reviews of this product on Amazon and by users at other sites. Many users seem to think that this camera was designed to compete with expensive, professional cameras that cost thousands of dollars and produce full HD quality video. That’s not what this is. Also, while my camera hasn’t had the ‘noise’ issue from the Mic, i have seen a camera that had the issue and its BARELY noticeable. Its almost like a very quiet background noise from a Florescent light or something.

Kodak has designed, marketed, and built a camera to compete with FLiP and has clearly produced a FAR better product.

This is my first video camera of any kind, and I am totally in love. I’m a bit technologically challenged, and so was pleasantly surprised to discover that the “set up” of this camera was easier than setting the time on my sports watch, and consisted only of scrolling through the date and time.

Within thirty seconds of turning on the camera, I was ready to begin shooting my first movie clip. Unlike the digital point-and-shoot cameras I have owned, the menu and functions on this camera are completely intuitive. Flip pioneered the “instant camcorder” concept and has prospered by it.

Now that everybody else is piling in, Flip perceived a need to expand its space and came up with the SlideHD.

The basic Flip functionality is present: you can record up to 4 hours of truly gorgeous 720p HD video, Audio quality is acceptable if your subject is nearby and ambient noise isn’t too loud. Low-light performance isn’t great, but considering the physics involved, there is no surprise there. The minimum focal length of the lens is longer than I would like meaning you can’t sit across a typical restaurant table and capture two adorable grandchildren being – well – adorable. The minimum focus distance is also a bit on the long side.

Because I bought it for my 70 year old mother [a complete technophobe] who wanted a video camera to keep me up to date on her gardens and her life. With virtually no guidance, Mom was Video-documenting her daily life. If her 10 year old Volvo had a strange noise, I was suddenly sent a Volvo video from Mom asking my advice. If the dog was sleeping close to the mangy cat – I was sent a “isn’t this cute” video. When the city decided to change an intersection, Mom was there documenting the shoddy work to show/email the city supervisors. Spectacular sunsets on the beach? Mom’s got her VADO in her pocket. As an aside, Michael Moore and Francis Ford Coppola probably shouldn’t be worried about the competition.

I just recently received my Vado HD 8 GB pocket video camcorder. This is so incredibly easy to use, it could not be simpler. Unless we could figure out a way to control it with brain waves?

I have used mini camcorders before. They do not have the video stabilization of the high dollar camcorders, but if you pay a little attention while you film and keep it reasonably steady, you will get great video footage. The sound quality is also very good for such a small unit.

Clearest picture and sound was important to me, expert reviews that pointed to the Flip UltraHD as well and I liked the built in software and the case I can get to shoot underwater. It is the number one selling camcorder as well. So that was my personal decision-making process. However, keep in mind that if you need reading glasses none of that will matter if the 2″ screen is too small for your viewing the shots easily for playback in which case you may wish to get the Kodak if that’s important to you..

Convenience, ease-of-use, and HD video for under 2 bills. I can’t believe other reviewers returned this item. If I want pro results I grab the Canon GL1 or XL-H1. If I want point-and-shoot results I grab the Flip UltraHD and press the big red button. The only problem is my wife keeps taking it.
