Over the last few years, as the pocket camcorder market has taken off, pioneer Flip Video has narrowly hung onto the lead it built by offering models with arguably superior designs and slightly better video quality. A few companies, including Creative, Sony, and RCA, have been nipping at its heels for a while, but none has been able to overtake Flip’s offerings. Until now. While Kodak’s Zi8 may not be perfect, it has a lot of the little extras we’ve been asking for–including electronic image stabilization and external mic support–and delivers very respectable video for a minicamcorder well under $200.
The Good
  • Great picture quality under adequate lighting
  • Up to 32 GB SDHC expansion
  • External microphone jack
  • Multiple recording modes (1080p @ 30, 720p @ 60, 720p @ 30, WVGA)
  • Light weight, and small enough to fit nicely in even a shirt pocket
  • Camera is very easy to use and user friendly
The Bad
  • Built-in microphone sound quality is not great (best with external mic)
  • The same poor low light picture quality that seems to plague all these pocket camcorders
  • Virtually no built-in memory, you will need to invest in an SDHC card

In the final analysis, while we have a few nitpicks for the Zi8, we have to say it’s the best pocket camcorder we’ve reviewed to date, with superior image quality and the best features. Today, we’d have to recommend it over the Flip Video models, though we can’t say what the future holds–for instance, we’ve yet to see Samsung’s contender–as Flip and other manufacturers will undoubtedly offer their own new pocket camcorders with these types of appealing new features and 1080p video capture.

The Kodak Zi8 has been a game changer for me personally.
When I purchased mine nearly a year ago, it was the perfect low cost HD video solution and still is. The Zi8 records HD Video 720p and 1080, although to be honest it’s 1080p isn’t great but the 720p is awesome. The built in mic works pretty well but the Zi8`s strong suit is it has an audio-in jack for connecting external microphones, brilliant! The Zi8 takes still photos at 5MP and if its a bright sunny day the photos will be full of rich color and great clarity. However, if you’re shooting indoors stills or video, bring a light because low light is definitely the Zi8′s greatest weakness. If this pocket cam came with a built-in flash it would be the ultimate pocket cam. The other great feature this camera brings to the table is the use of SD memory cards instead of internal flash memory found on the Flip cams. HD video devours memory so having the ability to drop in a 16GB or 32GB SD card is awesome. Another cool feature the Kodak Zi8 has is it can zoom while shooting video which is a feature a lot of low cost cameras lack.

I rarely will type/review products but I’ve been a little frustrated reading the reviews of this product on Amazon and by users at other sites. Many users seem to think that this camera was designed to compete with expensive, professional cameras that cost thousands of dollars and produce full HD quality video. That’s not what this is. Also, while my camera hasn’t had the ‘noise’ issue from the Mic, i have seen a camera that had the issue and its BARELY noticeable. Its almost like a very quiet background noise from a Florescent light or something.

Kodak has designed, marketed, and built a camera to compete with FLiP and has clearly produced a FAR better product.
